Browsing

What Browsers Can I Use?

The site is optimised to be most efficient on modern standards-compliant browsers like Firefox and Chrome. You can view the site in Internet Explorer, but it is buggy, slow, has security risks and ignores common internet standards adopted by other browser developers (Beta 9.0 causes numerous problems with modern sites). We would ultimately recommend Firefox, which will provide a fast and safe viewing experience.

NB Ultimately, all sites are coded to be as compliant with as many browsers as possible, but it is not possible to ensure full functionality for proprietary browsers such as AOL.

Why do some links open in "Overlay" windows?

An "Overlay" window provides an easy way of displaying information without leaving the website or the current page. This is why we have used the mechanism in the Results Section for instance - as it allows fast viewing of online results from an external source.

NB If you want to open an overlay link in a normal window or tab, "right-click" on the link and choose your option.

The fonts and alignment do not look right?

The website is developed for "normal" font-size settings in the browser. If you have increased or decreased the font size in your browser, then this will affect the layout of the site.

Downloads and Viewing

Most documents available for download are in PDF format. When clicking on a document link, most browsers will simply ask you where to save the document locally. However, you may find that a browser plugin will display the document in the browser window instead of downloading it. If this is the case and you wish to download a document, "right click" on the link and save by this method.

If you are viewing video on the site and it doesn't appear, it may be that your browser is set to download video - in which case you need to change your settings.

Access and Login

Access to the website?

The main content of the Daring site is open to the public, but there are sections that are for Members and Committee only. Login details have been provided by the Administrator to members only. Please contact the Administrator if you have forgotten the login details.

I am a Member - can I Login?

Yes, login details have been provided by the Administrator to all members. Please contact the Administrator if you have forgotten the login details.

How Do I Become a Member?

You can apply for membership through forms on our website here - or alternatively contact the Daring Administrator in our Contacts section here .

Logging In and Out (Security)?

When you Login, you should be aware that modern browsers will store that information (or ask you to). We recommend, especially on public computers, that you do not allow the browser to remember your Login details. It is also very important that you always "Logout" using the button in the left menu. This will prevent unregistered people from accessing the secure content.

Also, you only need to be logged in to access private content. When you are finished in the Private Area, please logout, as the security of the site will often restrict the number of users and duration of access in the Private Members Area.

Content and Navigation

Navigating the Daring Website?

The main sections of the site can be accessed through the top menu. Each section has sub menus which appear on the left and provide further navigation options inside each category of content.

Most of the content on the Daring website is contained within "Articles". Most Articles have an option to print or email to a friend. We display a minimal number of Articles on each page, so that the site loads quickly and is not content-heavy. if there are further Articles, more to read, then the menus at the bottom of the page provide further options.

Searching Content?

Through the search box (top left), the system uses a local autosearch to query content by word/s contained in the body text of each piece of information. If Members are logged in then the search will also include private content.

NB The search will not include content in documents (where information is held in PDF format).

Emailing Content Links?

When emailing an article to a friend, the site uses an email popup form. This form has a pre-built timestamp to ensure spambots cannot trawl the site. If you fill out this form faster than 10 secs you may find it responds with an error message. If this happens please simply take a little longer to populate the form.

External Content and Update Frequency?

The website is frequently updated by the Committee and Administrator, all Articles show dates and are displayed in order by "creation date". The system works on both creation and update ordering - therefore if an Article is updated later, it may display ahead of more recent Articles (even though its creation date is prior).

We make use of various content from external sources through newsfeeds and weblinks. Newsfeeds are automatic and as with any other external content, the rights and responsibilities lie solely with the external provider. The Daring Association is simply providing links to sources of useful information, we neither endorse, nor take responsibility for content displayed by these external sources (we accept no liability for accuracy, offense or any such other action resulting from linking to these sources).
